“A mirror does not only reflect those who look at it, it also gives access to an imaginary dimension of space that Michel Foucault describes as heterotopic.
The sculpture proposed by Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves, Nekromanteion, plays on the heterotopic and liminal function of the mirror. It is a door and a crossing point. The artist draws inspiration from the necromancy mirrors of Acheron in ancient Greece and the false doors carved on tombs in ancient Egypt, through which the soul of the deceased traveled to the afterlife.
The image of dark nebulae – the birthplace of the stars observed in the darkest regions of the universe – is revealed in alternation, as if to emphasize the close correlation between our lives and the cosmos.”
